My cat will not use his litter box, what can I do?

After ruling out health issues with your vet, make sure that you are keeping your kitty's litter box clean.  You wouldn't want to use a dirty bathroom, would you?  If you have more than one cat, make sure to use one more litter box than the number of cats that you have.   If your cat is consistently urinating in the same spot, try placing an extra litter box in that area.  Feliway, sold at the Cat Clinic and Hospital, can also be used to help discourage urinating in unwanted areas. It mimics a cats pheromones to help comfort and reassure your pet.  It is available in a spray or in a plug-in diffuser with refills available.  Both are equally as effective, and you will find them in use in our own clinic to help our patients relax.  Another option is making the litter pan more attractive to you cat.  Using Cat Attract Litter Additive, only available through veterinarians, can help train you cat to use the litter box.  By adding a scoop to a clean litter box you can help make problem cats stop urinating around your house.

How can I protect my outdoor cat ?

First, make sure that your cat is up to date on his shots and flea treatments.  If you choose to have your cat wear a collar, we recommend that you use one that can easily slip off.  While collars are great ways for dogs to wear identification tags, they are not for felines.  Cats frequently get their collars caught on things such as branches which can lead to strangulation.  The Cat Clinic and Hospital carries a variety of collars that are safe for your cat.  If you want to easily identify your cat if he runs away, we recommend that you use an identification chip.  These tiny chips are injected under your cat's skin and remain there for life.  If your cat is found, it will be scanned to check for a chip.  When the chips are scanned, the owner will be identified immediately that their pet has been located.  You can call the Cat Clinic and Hospital for more information about microchips or to make an appointment to have your cat protected.

How can I safely introduce a new cat/kitten to my other pets ?

For a smooth introduction, keep the new cat/kitten in a separate room with a litter box and food for at least a couple of days. A slow introduction will help reduce the amount of stress on both the new cat and current pets.  Allow your pets to sniff and stick their paws under the doors.  This will help acquaint them to each other.  To make the process less stressful, try using Feliway, a product that mimics cat pheromones and helps to reduce stress and comfort cats.  It can be used as a spray or a plug-in diffuser.  If you choose to use this product, you should spray/plug it where the new cat is and where the other cats are.  This product is available at the Cat Clinic and Hospital and is used in our own clinic to help relieve the stress of our patients.  When you finally decide to have your new cat meet the rest of your pets, expect conflict or tension for a few weeks.
